Shipping groups let you charge different shipping rates for some products, like furniture or fragile items, while the rest of your store keeps its regular rates. You add products or specific variants to a group, then add rates that apply only to that group.
Shipping groups change how checkout works for the products in them. Check these limits before you set up a group:
-
A group needs a rate in every zone. Products in a group use only that group's rates, not your existing ones. If a zone has no rate for the group, customers in that zone can't check out with those products.
-
One group per product. A product or variant can be in only one group. Adding it to a different group moves it there.
-
Pickup applies to the whole order. Pickup locations can't be limited to a group. Customers choose pickup or shipping for everything in the cart.
-
Local delivery needs a rate for each group too. Customers at a ZIP or postal code with a local delivery rate see only local delivery rates, so add a local delivery rate for each group at that ZIP or postal code. To add a rate to a ZIP or postal code that already has one, click + Add rate > To existing local delivery and select it.
-
No Easyship rates. Shipping groups use only the rates you set up. Easyship's automated rates don't apply to them, but orders with products from a group still sync to Easyship for fulfillment.
-
Express payment buttons are hidden for mixed carts. When a cart has products from more than one group, buttons such as Apple Pay and Google Pay don't appear.
-
The free shipping progress bar is hidden when the cart has any product from a group. For more on the progress bar, see Add a Free Shipping Progress Bar.
-
Physical products only, up to 60 groups. Digital products, services, and donations can't be in a group. Each group needs a unique name.
Products that aren't in a group are in Standard products and keep using your existing rates. If you never create a group, nothing about your shipping or checkout changes.
To create a shipping group:
-
In your store, go to Business Settings > Shipping & Pickup.
-
To the right of Shipping Zones, click + New group.
-
Enter a name for the group, such as Furniture. Customers don't see this name.
-
Search for and select the products to add:
-
To add a product with all its variants, select the product.
-
To add only some variants, expand the product and select those variants. The other variants stay in Standard products.
-
-
Click Save.
If a product you select is already in another group, you're asked to confirm. Click Move products to move it to this group.
To add a rate for a group:
-
In Shipping & Pickup, find the zone where you ship the group's products and click + Add rate. If the zone has local delivery, choose To shipping zone or To existing local delivery. To use an existing rate instead, click ... next to the rate and edit it.
-
Set up the rate type and amount. For details on each rate type, see Shipping and Pickup in Native Store.
-
In Which products use this method?, select the group.
-
In Name at checkout, enter the name customers see, such as Furniture delivery.
-
Click Save.
Repeat for every zone where you ship the group's products. Which products use this method? appears only when your store has at least one group. Rates set to Standard products apply to every product that isn't in a group. In your list of zones, each rate shows which products it applies to.
To check which rates customers at a specific address will see, click the shipping rate simulator icon next to + New Zone.
When a cart has products from more than one group, checkout shows each group as its own shipment, such as Shipment 1 and Shipment 2. Customers choose a rate for each shipment, and the shipping costs are added together. Customers see each rate's name at checkout, not the group name. If every product in the cart is in the same group, checkout looks the same as it does without groups.
When a cart has more than one group, each rate type is calculated like this:
-
Flat rate: charged once for each group, no matter how many of its products are in the cart.
-
By weight: based on the weight of that group's products only.
-
By price, including free shipping over an amount: based on the subtotal of the whole cart.
For example, a store has a $10 flat rate for Standard products and a $35 flat rate for a Fragile group. A customer who buys a vase from the Fragile group and a T-shirt pays $45 for shipping.
If any group in the cart has no rate for the customer's address, the customer can't check out. Checkout shows the message Some items can't be shipped to this address and names the products, so the customer can change the address or remove those products.
